The emergency room (residential protected space) is undoubtedly one of the most important rooms in every home in Israel. In addition to its life-saving role, it is often used as a bedroom, study, or children's room. Over the years, the heavy metal frame of the emergency room tends to accumulate scratches, damage, and sometimes even rust. Painting a dimension transom It is a necessary operation not only on an aesthetic level, but also to maintain the integrity of the metal and the soundness of the room. In this article, we will provide you with all the knowledge necessary to perform the work at the highest level, whether you do it yourself or invite an expert as part of a larger home painting project.

Regular wooden transoms throughout the house require some care, but a protected space transom is made of heavy cast steel. This fact completely changes the approach to work and the materials required. First, steel is susceptible to oxidation and rust, especially in areas with high humidity. Second, the dimensional transom plays a critical role in the tightness of the room in the event of an emergency (according to Home Front Command standards). Any paint job must take into account the sealing rubbers and the snap mechanism, as improper painting may damage the tightness of the room and make it substandard.

To paint a window frame professionally and for years to come, you must stock up on the right materials in advance. In the field of advanced paint jobs, using cheap or unsuitable materials will lead to peeling within a few months.

Proper implementation of the following steps will ensure a smooth, durable, and standard result. Do not skip the preparation steps, as in the world of paint jobs, preparation is 80% of the project's success.

The first and most critical step is Removing the sealing rubber. Dimension frames have a perimeter rubber band that seals the door. Try to gently pull it out of its track and keep it aside until the work is finished and the paint is completely dry. If the rubber band is dry or torn, this is the perfect time to replace it with a new one. Then, stick masking tape on the walls adjacent to the frame and spread protection on the floor.

Go over the entire frame with sandpaper. The goal is not to remove all the old paint (unless it is peeling), but to create a slight roughness (a 'mechanical key') that will help the new paint adhere. If there are any rust spots, they must be sanded down to clean metal. In cases of severe rust, it is recommended to use a rust converter.

After sanding, the frame will be full of sanding dust. Clean the frame with a damp cloth, then go over it with a rag dipped in thinner or alcohol to remove grease. Paint does not adhere well to an oily or dusty surface.

If you choose to use a paint that requires a primer, or if you have exposed metal after sanding off rust, apply a thin coat of metal primer. Allow to dry completely according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Now we have reached the stage of painting the dimension frame itself. Mix the paint well. Start by painting the corners and inside angles with a small brush. Immediately after, go over the straight surfaces of the frame with a small sponge roller to get a smooth finish without brush marks. Pro tip: It is better to paint two thin coats than one thick coat. A thick coat may cause leaks and prevent the door from closing properly. Allow to dry between coats.

When considering whether to do the job yourself or hire a professional, it's important to know the average market costs for painting services. Below is a table that details estimated costs for common painting jobs related to door frames and doors:

* The prices shown in the table are a general estimate and may vary depending on the condition of the window sill, the complexity of the work, and geographical location.

Often, the decision to paint a door frame comes as part of a complete renovation or general refresh of the home. When you hire a professional contractor for painting work for the entire apartment, it is very worthwhile to include the door and door frame in the price quote. Skilled professionals have advanced spraying equipment (airless or compressor) that allows them to paint metal door frames to a factory-quality finish, without brush or roller marks, and in micronized layers that do not damage the door's tightness.

Why is painting a dimensional window different from regular windows?
