In the living room, the rule of "the center of the screen at eye level when sitting" works great. In the bedroom, this rule fails, because no one watches TV while sitting upright: you lie down or semi-lie down on pillows, your head tilted up, and the screen should be higher and also tilted down. In this guide, we'll explain exactly how to calculate the correct height for your bedroom, provide a ready-made table by screen size, go over the types of arms that are suitable for a bedroom, and note how much professional installation costs, including connecting to electricity and routing cables.
At Abi Ekhakot, we install TVs in bedrooms every week, from 32 inches to 85 inches, on plaster, blocks, and concrete. The formula here is the one we use in the field.
The formula: How to calculate the height of a TV in a bedroom
Step 1: Measure eye level in the viewing position. Sit in bed as you would actually watch (with pillows, leaning against the headboard) and measure from the floor to your eyes. For most beds, this is 90-110 cm.
Step 2: Add 10-20 cm. When lying down, the head is tilted slightly upward, so it is more comfortable when the center of the screen is slightly above eye level. The result is the height of the center of the screen.
Step 3: Calculate the height of the bottom edge. Divide the screen height (not the diagonal!) by 2, and subtract from the center. This is the height at which the bottom of the TV will hang, and this is the number the installer needs.
Step 4: Tilt the screen 10-15 degrees downward. This is why a bedroom almost always needs a tilt arm rather than a fixed rack.
Example: Eye height in bed 100 cm. Add 15 = center of screen at 115 cm. 55-inch TV that is about 68 cm high: bottom of screen at 115 minus 34 = 81 cm from the floor.
Ready-made height chart for bedroom
Based on a standard bed (eye height 100 cm) and a screen center at 115 cm. If your bed is high or low, add or subtract the difference.
| Screen size | Screen height (approx.) | Height of the bottom of the screen from the floor | Screen center height |
|---|---|---|---|
| 32 inches' | 40 cm | 95 cm | 115 cm |
| 43 inches' | 54 cm | 88 cm | 115 cm |
| 50 inches' | 62 cm | 84 cm | 115 cm |
| 55 inches' | 68 cm | 81 cm | 115 cm |
| 65 inches' | 81 cm | 75 cm | 115 cm |
| 75 inches' | 93 cm | 69 cm | 115 cm |
Please note: On large screens (65 and above) in a small bedroom, the center of the screen can be raised to 120-125 cm so that the top does not "squeeze" and the viewing distance is comfortable. More about Height for installing a TV In different rooms.
Viewing distance: the second rule that determines height
The larger the screen, the greater the distance from the bed should be, and the greater the distance, the higher you can hang it without discomfort. Rule of thumb for 4K screens: viewing distance of 1.2-1.5 times the diagonal. For 55 inches (140 cm) this is 1.7-2.1 meters; for 65 inches (165 cm) this is 2-2.5 meters. In a bedroom with 3 meters between the wall and the bed, 55-65 inches is the comfortable range.
The mistakes we see the most
Hanging at living room height (center 100-105 cm). Feels too low when lying down, and you see the screen "from above" with reflections of the ceiling.
Hanging under the ceiling. The opposite: a screen that hangs 170-180 cm in the center looks like it's in a hospital and requires you to lie flat to see. Even with a tilt, it tires the neck.
Fixed rack without tilt. In a bedroom, you almost always need a 10-15 degree tilt. A fixed mount will leave a reflection of the window or lamp in the screen.
Without thinking about the cables. In the living room, there is usually an outlet and connections behind the screen; in the bedroom, there is almost never one. Plan for an electrical outlet and antenna/network point behind the screen, or route cables in a duct.
Hanging on plaster without checking what's behind it. A drywall can only support a TV with anchoring to profiles or with special dowels for drywall. A 65-inch screen on a regular dowel in drywall is a matter of time. Details in the guide on Hanging a TV on a drywall wall.
Which arm is suitable for a bedroom?
Tilt arm. The right choice for the 90% in bedrooms. Close to the wall (4-6 cm), allows for a tilt of up to 15 degrees downward. Cheap and stable.
Articulated arm (Full Motion). Also allows you to pull the screen away from the wall and rotate it. Suitable when the bed is not against the wall, when there is an additional seating area in the room, or when you want to watch from both the bed and the dresser. More expensive and requires stronger anchoring.
Arm to the ceiling. For rooms where there is no free wall in front of the bed, or in children's rooms to keep the screen out of reach. Requires a concrete ceiling or anchoring to a beam.
Fixed rack. Not recommended for a bedroom due to the lack of tilt, unless the screen is hung exactly at eye level when sitting in bed.
Where on the wall: in front of the bed or in the corner?
Right in front of the bed, in the center of the wall, is the standard, but not always possible: a window, a closet, or a door. Two alternatives that work well: an articulated arm in the corner of the room that extends toward the bed, or hanging over a low nightstand on the side with a slight tilt and rotation. What doesn't work: a screen that is more than 30 degrees from the direct line of sight, because the neck is tilted the entire time watching.
Electricity and cables in the bedroom
In most bedrooms, the only outlet near the TV wall is next to the nightstand. The solutions, from cheap to expensive: a cable duct painted the same color as the wall (the common solution), a new outlet behind the screen that connects to the existing outlet (an hour-long electrician's job), or routing the cables inside drywall. We do all three, including Adding a power outlet by Licensed electrician.
Height by bed type and position
Not every bedroom is the same, and three things change the formula:
Low bed (platform, 30-40 cm). Eye height when lying down drops to 85-95 cm. Center of the screen: 100-110 cm. Don't raise the screen "to make it more spacious," that's exactly what creates the tilted neck.
A high bed or a bed with a thick headboard (55-65 cm). Eye height 105-115 cm. Center of the screen: 120-130 cm.
Watching while sitting upright in bed (working from bed, children playing). So the rule of the living room comes back: the center of the screen is at eye level when sitting, with no extra. In a room used for both, an articulated arm allows for some height adjustment, but the best compromise is a screen center at 110 cm with tilt.
A youth bed or bunk bed. The screen should be out of reach and at a height that is suitable for the upper floor; here a ceiling arm or high hanging with a strong tilt (20 degrees) is the solution.
What about a screen above the headboard?
Sometimes the only free wall is the one behind the bed, and you're debating whether to hang a TV on the side wall and watch in rotation. Rule: An angle of up to 30 degrees from the direct line of sight is tolerable, beyond that the neck suffers. The right solution in such cases is a long articulated arm (40-60 cm) on the side wall, which extends and rotates toward the bed, and returns to the wall when not watching.
Wall type and anchoring type
concrete. The strongest wall. 10 mm dowels and anchor bolts. Any arm fits.
Blocks. Strong but partially hollow. Hollow block dowels or chemical dowels for large screens.
Itong. Soft material that crumbles. Dedicated dowels for the Yitung (long screws with a wide thread) or a wooden plate distributes the load. More in the guide on Installing a TV on an Itong wall.
plaster. Only for profiles (standard spacing 40-60 cm) or with butterfly/molly dowels for drywall, and only for screens up to the weight that the dowel approves. A large screen on drywall without profiles is the number one reason for conversations about "the TV fell in the night.".
A wall with plumbing or electricity behind the planned location. Before every drilling, we scan with a detector. In bedrooms, this is critical: behind the wall with the TV is often the bathroom with the plumbing.
Examples from the field
Apartment in Tel Aviv, low bed, 55-inch screen. Center of the screen at 108 cm, 12 degree tilt arm, new outlet behind the screen. Hour and a half including electrician.
A bedroom in Herzliya, 75 inches on a drywall. Profile locating, heavy tilt arm anchored to two profiles and reinforcement plate. Screen center at 122 cm due to screen size and 3 meter viewing distance.
Children's room in Rishon LeZion, 43 inches. Arm to the concrete ceiling, screen out of reach, tilt 20 degrees towards the bed.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the correct height for a 55-inch TV in a bedroom? The center of the screen is around 115 cm from the floor, meaning the bottom of the screen is 80-82 cm, with a 10-15 degree downward tilt. If the bed is higher than 55 cm, add the difference.
Is it possible to hang a TV on a drywall in a bedroom? Yes, with anchoring to profiles or dedicated dowels for drywall and choosing an arm based on the weight of the screen. Screens over 65 inches on drywall require inspection by the installer.
Is a rack or a dresser better? A rack provides the correct height and tilt, saves space, and prevents the screen from falling. A dresser is only suitable if its height brings the center of the screen to 110-120 cm.
How high to hang a TV above a dresser? So that the center of the screen will be at 110-120 cm, and not according to the height of the dresser. If the dresser is low, hang it on the wall above it and do not place it on it.
How do you hide the cables? A painted duct, a new outlet behind the screen, or routing inside the plaster. More in the post about Hanging a TV on a block wall.
Are you bringing the arm? Yes, tilt and articulated arms of any size, or you can fix it yourself and we will install it.
Do you also install in children's rooms? Yes, and there we recommend a slightly higher height and a ceiling arm or a fixed arm, for safety reasons.
What areas do you work in? Tel Aviv and Gush Dan, Sharon, Jerusalem, Netanya, Haifa, Beer Sheva and Ashdod. Details inInstall a TV.
Quick calculator by bed height
If you don't want to measure eye level, you can start from the height of the bed (from the floor to the top of the mattress) and arrive at a very close answer:
| Mattress height from the floor | Approximate eye height when lying down and reclining | Recommended screen center height | 55 inch screen bottom' | 65 inch screen bottom' |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 35 cm (platform bed) | 85–90 cm | 100–105 cm | 66–71 cm | 60–65 cm |
| 45 cm (standard bed) | 95–100 cm | 110–115 cm | 76–81 cm | 70–75 cm |
| 55 cm (high bed / thick mattress) | 105–110 cm | 120–125 cm | 86–91 cm | 80–85 cm |
| 65 cm (bed with high base) | 115–120 cm | 130–135 cm | 96–101 cm | 90–95 cm |
The table places a headboard or pillows that allow for a semi-sitting position. If you watch lying almost flat, add another 10 cm to the center of the screen and increase the tilt to 15–20 degrees.
Height of TV in bedroom compared to other rooms
The bedroom is the exception, so it's worth seeing it in comparison to the rest of the house:
| room | Viewing position | Screen center height | bias |
|---|---|---|---|
| Living room | Sitting on a sofa | 100–110 cm | 0–5 degrees |
| Bedroom | Semi-reclining in bed | 110–125 cm | 10–15 degrees |
| Kitchen / Dining Area | Standing or sitting tall | 140–160 cm | 10–15 degrees |
| nursery | Sitting on the floor or in bed | 100–115 cm (out of reach) | 10–20 degrees |
| Home gym | Standing/walking | 150–170 cm | 15–20 degrees |
| Above the fireplace | Sitting, no choice | 130–150 cm | 15–20 degrees (arm bends) |
The important line: The difference between the living room and the bedroom is 10–15 cm in height and another 10–15 degrees of tilt. Anyone who hangs in the bedroom "like in the living room" gets a screen that is too low and blinding.
What is included in the installation price and what is not?
Installing a TV in a bedroom at an agreed price includes:
- Arrival at a place in the center of the country.
- Scanning the wall with an electrical and plumbing detector, and locating profiles in the plaster.
- Calculating the height with you and marking before drilling.
- Drilling and anchoring appropriate for the type of wall.
- Tilt arm (in basic installation) and its installation.
- Hanging, leveling, connecting all cables and operating.
Not included, and priced separately:
- Articulated arm or ceiling arm (depending on model).
- Adding a power outlet or network point behind the screen (certified electrician).
- Cable routing inside a drywall (cutting, threading, closing).
- Dismantling and removing old hangers and filling holes.
- Installing a headboard or dresser that blocks the wall.
Installing a TV in a rented apartment – what is permitted?
This is one of our frequently asked questions. In most rental contracts, drilling to mount a TV is permitted, provided that it is plugged and repaired upon completion. What we recommend:
- Request written approval (a WhatsApp message is sufficient) before drilling.
- Choose an arm with a small plate: 4 holes instead of 8.
- Keep the hanger and screws; at the end of the rental, we disassemble, fill with putty, and paint in place.
- For drywall walls in rented apartments, use drywall dowels that can be removed cleanly.
A no-drilling alternative: a floor-standing TV stand with an arm, which allows for height and tilt like a wall mount. Also suitable for those who change rooms.

Glossary
VESA. The standard distances between the screw holes on the back of the TV (e.g. 200×200, 400×400) determines which arm is suitable.
Tilt arm. A wall-mounted rack that allows you to tilt the screen downwards. The right choice for a bedroom.
Articulated arm (Full Motion). An arm that extends from the wall and rotates. For rooms where the bed is not against the wall.
profile. The metal beam behind the drywall. The only place that bears weight in a drywall.
Butterfly Dibble / Molly. Drywall dowels that open behind the board. Suitable for light screens only.
Metal and electrical detectors. A device that locates cables, pipes and profiles before drilling.
Viewing distance. The distance from the eyes to the screen; for 4K screens, 1.2–1.5 times the screen diagonal.
Checklist before the installer arrives
- Know the screen size and weight (listed on the menu or packaging).
- Check what type of wall it is (knock: hollow sound = plaster, solid sound = concrete/block).
- Mark where the nearest outlet is and where the antenna or network point is.
- Sit in bed as you watch and measure eye level – or use the table above.
- Clear the wall: move a dresser, take down pictures.
- Prepare the cables: HDMI, power, converter/streamer, if you want to connect everything in the same visit.
More questions about TV height in a bedroom
What do you do when both partners are of different heights? Calculated based on the average eye height when lying down, and compensated by tilt. The difference between 165 and 185 cm in height is expressed in 5–7 cm in eye height in bed, which is within the comfort range.
Does screen height affect sleep quality? A screen that is too high forces you to raise your head and strains your neck, which interferes with falling asleep. A screen at the right height with a tilt allows for relaxed viewing from your pillows.
Is a 75-inch TV worth it in a 12 square meter bedroom? In most cases, no: the viewing distance will be too short and the screen will "squeeze." 55–65 inches is the comfortable range for an average bedroom.
How do you hide the screen when you're not watching? Options: an articulated arm that retracts into a corner, a screen that displays images in standby mode (Ambient Mode), or a cabinet with a sliding door in front of the screen.
Can I hang a TV on a upholstered headboard? Not on the headboard itself. Hang it on the wall above it, and measure the height from the floor, not from the headboard.
Which is better: a screen on the wall or a projector in the bedroom? A projector is suitable for a dark room with a blank white wall and for those who watch mostly at night. For everyday viewing in the light, a screen on the wall is more convenient and simpler.
Are you also connecting a converter, sound bar, and streamer? Yes, on the same visit. It is a good idea to prepare the cables in advance.
How long is the offer valid? 30 days. Arm prices vary, so a date is specified.
What to ask before hiring a TV installer
- Do you check the wall with a detector before drilling? In bedrooms, the wall often borders the bathroom, and behind it are pipes.
- What arm does it come with, and what weight is it approved for? A 25 kg arm for a 30 kg screen is a matter of time.
- Do you calculate height by bed or by "standard"? A good installer asks how you watch, not just what size screen you have.
- What does the price include? Reach, arm, connect, operate – or just drill.
- What's going on with the cables? A duct, a new outlet or routing in the wall, and what it costs.
Why choose retaining stones for installing a TV in a bedroom?
Our TV installer comes with arms for every size, a wall detector, and a laser level, and calculates the height with you from the bed before drilling. Installation starts at 150 NIS including a tilt arm, and the quote is final before arrival. If necessary, a certified electrician also comes to add an outlet behind the screen, during the same visit. See also the guide on Hanging a TV on a drywall wall And the page Television installer.
In conclusion
The height of a TV in a bedroom is determined by how you actually watch: eye level in bed plus 10-20 cm to the center of the screen, with a tilt of 10-15 degrees. For most beds and screens, this is a screen center of 110-120 cm. If you want someone to calculate, drill, hang, and connect, professional installation starts at 150 NIS including an arm. Call or send a message to 052-444-0565.
