When you need a new connection: a basic guide to replacing a plug at home – and safety above all with maintenance blocks

Replacing an electrical plug may seem like a simple task, but it involves working with electricity and requires a lot of care. Whether the plug on a household appliance is damaged, or you need to adapt a plug to a new appliance, it is important to perform the operation correctly and safely. In this article, we at Abi Ahaqot will explain the basic steps for replacing a plug, but we emphasize that Working with electricity can be dangerous and should be performed with great care or by a qualified electrician.

Why replace a plug?

There are several reasons why you may need to replace an electrical plug:

  • Damaged or broken plug: Using a damaged plug can be dangerous and cause short circuits or electric shock.
  • Adapting a plug to a new device: Electrical appliances purchased from abroad may come with a plug that is not suitable for outlets in Israel.
  • comfort: Sometimes it is necessary to replace a regular plug with an angled plug to save space behind furniture.

Tools required to replace a plug:

  • Small screwdriver: Usually a flathead or Phillips screwdriver, depending on the type of screws in the plug.
  • Knife or wire stripper: To remove the insulation from the ends of the wires.
  • Needle-nose pliers (optional): For easy bending of the wire ends.
  • Voltage tester (highly recommended): Make sure there is no voltage before starting work.
  • New plug: Compatible with the type of device and outlets in Israel.

Steps to replace a plug (with great care and by checking the voltage!):

  1. Unplug the device! This is the most critical step for your safety. Make sure the device is completely unplugged from the electrical outlet.
  2. Check for voltage! (Recommended): If you have a voltage tester, make sure there is no electricity flowing through the appliance's cord.
  3. Open the old plug: Unscrew the screws holding the plug cover and open it.
  4. Pay attention to the wire connection: Before you disconnect the wires, note where each wire is connected inside the old plug. Typically, the wires will be different colors (brown or black - live, blue or white - neutral, yellow-green - ground).
  5. Disconnect the wires: Loosen the screws or connecting mechanism that holds the wires in place and carefully disconnect them.
  6. Prepare the ends of the device's wires: Using a knife or wire stripper, carefully remove about 1 cm of insulation from the ends of the wires. Be careful not to damage the copper wires themselves.
  7. Connect the wires to the new plug: Open the new plug and look at the connection markings inside. Connect each wire to the appropriate place according to the colors (if any) and markings (L for live, N for neutral, earth mark for earth). Tighten the screws or connection mechanism so that the wires are securely connected and do not come loose.
  8. Arrange the wires inside the plug: Make sure the wires are neatly placed inside the plug and that their insulation reaches the connection point.
  9. Close the new plug: Replace the plug cover and tighten the screws.
  10. Check the connections: Make sure the plug is closed tightly and the wires are connected securely.

Common mistakes to avoid:

  • Failure to disconnect the device from the power supply: Serious risk of electric shock.
  • Incorrect wiring: May cause a short circuit, fire or damage to the device.
  • Leaving copper wires exposed: May cause short circuits or electric shock.
  • Failure to tighten the screws properly: May cause loose connection and overheating.
  • Using an unsuitable plug: Make sure the new plug is suitable for the type of appliance and outlets in Israel.

Safety above all:

If you feel uncomfortable replacing the plug yourself, if you are unsure about the type of wires or the connection method, or if it is a high-power electrical appliance, Do not hesitate to contact a qualified electrician. Unprofessional work with electricity can be dangerous.
