Not regular paper wallpaper, but a thick vinyl sheet that is glued directly to the ceramic, is completely waterproof, and lasts for years even in the shower. In this guide, we will explain which wallpaper is truly waterproof (and which will peel off after a month), how much it costs, how to prepare the wall, and what is the difference between self-adhesive and professional adhesive.

Which wallpaper is truly waterproof?
Not every wallpaper that says "moisture-resistant" is suitable for a shower. There is a difference between "moisture-resistant" (bathroom, outside the shower) and "water-resistant" (inside the shower, in direct contact with hot, soapy water).
Thick vinyl (PVC) wallpaper with adhesive backing. This is the standard for showers: a sheet 0.3-0.5 mm thick, completely opaque, with a strong acrylic adhesive. It is available in marble, concrete, wood, and tile patterns. This is what we glue inside showers.
Brass-based vinyl wallpaper (Non-woven vinyl). Suitable for bathroom walls outside the shower. Resistant to steam and cleaning, but not to running water.
Paper or textile wallpaper. Not suitable for the bathroom at all, not even near the sink.

The cost of the work (70–150 NIS per square meter) includes preparing the wall, filling the gap, primer, gluing, and sealing the edges with silicone. A roll of vinyl usually covers 4–5 square meters. The price quote you receive is final and details labor and material separately.
What affects the price?
The condition of the wall. Smooth, intact ceramic is the ideal surface. Tiles with deeply recessed grout require filling, as the wallpaper will "sink" into the grout and show the tile lines. A wall with mold or loose tiles requires pre-treatment.
surface. A standard shower stall (3 walls, 2 meters high) is 8-12 square meters. A complete bathroom is 15-25 square meters. The price per square meter decreases as the area increases.
The number of corners and cuts. Niches, faucets, built-in shelves, windows, exposed piping, all require precise cutting and sealing.
The type of example. Marble patterns with veins require pattern matching between sheets (more material waste and more time) compared to concrete or a solid color.
Do I need to remove wallpaper or paint first?. Removing old wallpaper or peeling paint adds preparation time and is priced separately.
How to prepare the wall – the step that determines everything
Ninety percent of shower wallpaper failures are due to poor preparation, not the wallpaper. Here's how to do it right:
- Thorough cleaning. Descale, remove grease and soap, then rinse and dry thoroughly. Soap residue is the number one enemy of glue.
- Mold treatment. If there is mold in the corners or in the base, treat it first, otherwise it will continue to grow under the wallpaper.
- Filling a submerged rifle. Fill the groove lines with acrylic filler and smooth them out to make the surface flat. Without this, after two weeks you can see the ceramic "slots" through the wallpaper.
- Primer. A layer of primer for ceramics improves the adhesion of the adhesive many times over.
- Measuring and cutting. The sheets are cut with an excess of a few centimeters, with a pattern adjustment.
- infection. From the most prominent corner outward, with a plastic squeegee to remove air, and pressing firmly at the edges.
- Sealing. All edges, corners and joints with the bathtub or floor are sealed with transparent or white sanitary silicone. This is what prevents water from entering from behind.
- Drying. 48-72 hours without water on the wall.
How long does shower wallpaper last?
Quality vinyl wallpaper applied to a properly prepared wall with sealed edges lasts 5-8 years with daily use. The early failures we see are almost always: edges that haven't been sealed (water gets in from behind and the adhesive weakens), a wall that hasn't been cleaned of soap residue, or cheap 0.1mm thick wallpaper that rips after a month.
Professional gluing or do it yourself?
You can stick it on yourself, and self-adhesive wallpaper is sold for exactly that. But a shower is the most challenging environment for wallpaper: uneven walls, lots of cuts, and above all, zero tolerance for mistakes, because every opening lets water in. Three things that most people who stick it on themselves don't do: caulk, primer, and silicone sealant at the edges. Without all three, the wallpaper will peel off within months. If you're going to stick it on yourself, at least buy thick vinyl and seal all the edges.
Wallpaper vs. shower renovation alternatives
Painting ceramics with epoxy. Cheap, but requires several coats, has a strong odor, takes 3-5 days to dry, and peels off in areas with hot water after a year or two. More suitable for the floor and walls outside the shower.
Panels (PVC/aluminum) on the ceramics. Very durable, modern looking, 2-3 times more expensive than wallpaper and require a carpenter or dedicated installer.

Microtopping (smoothed concrete). Excellent appearance, expensive, and requires a skilled professional and perfect sealing.
Wallpaper is the fastest and cheapest solution, and is especially suitable for rented apartments, for renovation before sale, and for those who want results now without renovation.
Which pattern to choose for a shower
White marble with gray veins. The most popular choice: illuminates, optically enlarges a small shower, and hides limescale. Requires pattern matching between sheets.
Light gray concrete. Modern look, no repeating pattern, so easy to match and less wasteful. Especially suitable for showers with black faucets.
White metro tiles. Printing small tiles with a dark grout gives the appearance of new cladding without breaking it. Note that the pattern "competes" with the lines of the old ceramic, so filling the grout is a must.
tree. Warm and cozy, common in Scandinavian style, but sometimes looks unnatural inside a shower. Better on the wall facing the shower rather than inside it.
Uniform (white, cream, gray). The easiest to apply, best conveys the look of the wall underneath, and therefore requires perfect preparation.
Wallpaper for a shower in a rented apartment
This is one of the most common uses, and rightly so: the wallpaper is glued to the ceramic without damaging it, and can be removed at the end of the lease with heat and adhesive remover. Most landlords agree when you explain to them that there is no drilling, no paint, and no breakage. Our tip: Take a photo of the walls before, and keep the old silicone in place at the edges (we add a layer over it, not remove it).
What to do with the black rifle?
The shower head is getting dark from mold and limescale, and wallpapering it over it doesn't solve the problem, it just covers it up. Before gluing, we clean the head with an anti-mold agent, dry it, and only then fill and glue it. If the head is crumbling, it's a sign of water getting in behind the ceramic, and it's worth checking with Leak detection Before covering.

Clean with water and mild soap or bathroom cleaner without abrasive powder. No hard brushes, no concentrated bleach. Once a year, check the silicone lines at the edges and renew if necessary. This way the wallpaper stays beautiful and sealed for years.
