The ceramic tiles in the shower are from the 1990s, the gun has turned black, and breaking everything up and re-tiling is two weeks of dust and tens of thousands of shekels. There is a third way: waterproof shower wallpaper. Not regular paper wallpaper, but a thick vinyl sheet that is glued directly to the ceramic, is completely waterproof, and lasts for years even in the shower. In this guide, we will explain which wallpaper is truly waterproof (and which will peel off after a month), how much it costs, how to prepare the wall, and what is the difference between self-adhesive and professional adhesive.
At Evni Ekhakut, we apply wallpaper and vinyl stickers to bathtubs and showers all over the country, and we see both the successes and failures of those who have tried on their own. Everything here is from the field.
Which wallpaper is truly waterproof?
Not every wallpaper that says "moisture-resistant" is suitable for a shower. There is a difference between "moisture-resistant" (bathroom, outside the shower) and "water-resistant" (inside the shower, in direct contact with hot, soapy water).
Thick vinyl (PVC) wallpaper with adhesive backing. This is the standard for showers: a sheet 0.3-0.5 mm thick, completely opaque, with a strong acrylic adhesive. It is available in marble, concrete, wood, and tile patterns. This is what we glue inside showers.
Brass-based vinyl wallpaper (Non-woven vinyl). Suitable for bathroom walls outside the shower. Resistant to steam and cleaning, but not to running water.
Paper or textile wallpaper. Not suitable for the bathroom at all, not even near the sink.
Vinyl sticker forMarble wallpaper And for the walls. Same technology as shower wallpaper, usually in a narrower roll width.
Price list – waterproof shower wallpaper
Prices include material, wall preparation and professional gluing, per square meter.
| type | Suitable for | Price per square meter including gluing |
|---|---|---|
| Thick adhesive vinyl (such as marble/concrete/tile) | Inside the shower, behind the sink | Labor 70–150 NIS per square meter + material 150–400 NIS per roll |
| Premium adhesive vinyl (3D texture, scratch resistant) | Heavy-duty shower stalls, hotel bathtubs | Labor 70–150 NIS per square meter + material according to model |
| Moisture-resistant vinyl wallpaper (outside the shower) | Bathroom walls, toilets | Labor 70–150 NIS per square meter + material 300–900 NIS per roll (non-woven) |
| Decorative stripe/frame | Combination with existing ceramics | According to the quote |
The cost of the work (70–150 NIS per square meter) includes preparing the wall, filling the gap, primer, gluing, and sealing the edges with silicone. A roll of vinyl usually covers 4–5 square meters. The price quote you receive is final and details labor and material separately.
What affects the price?
The condition of the wall. Smooth, intact ceramic is the ideal surface. Tiles with deeply recessed grout require filling, as the wallpaper will "sink" into the grout and show the tile lines. A wall with mold or loose tiles requires pre-treatment.
surface. A standard shower stall (3 walls, 2 meters high) is 8-12 square meters. A complete bathroom is 15-25 square meters. The price per square meter decreases as the area increases.
The number of corners and cuts. Niches, faucets, built-in shelves, windows, exposed piping, all require precise cutting and sealing.
The type of example. Marble patterns with veins require pattern matching between sheets (more material waste and more time) compared to concrete or a solid color.
Do I need to remove wallpaper or paint first?. Removing old wallpaper or peeling paint adds preparation time and is priced separately.
How to prepare the wall – the step that determines everything
Ninety percent of shower wallpaper failures are due to poor preparation, not the wallpaper. Here's how to do it right:
- Thorough cleaning. Descale, remove grease and soap, then rinse and dry thoroughly. Soap residue is the number one enemy of glue.
- Mold treatment. If there is mold in the corners or in the base, treat it first, otherwise it will continue to grow under the wallpaper.
- Filling a submerged rifle. Fill the groove lines with acrylic filler and smooth them out to make the surface flat. Without this, after two weeks you can see the ceramic "slots" through the wallpaper.
- Primer. A layer of primer for ceramics improves the adhesion of the adhesive many times over.
- Measuring and cutting. The sheets are cut with an excess of a few centimeters, with a pattern adjustment.
- infection. From the most prominent corner outward, with a plastic squeegee to remove air, and pressing firmly at the edges.
- Sealing. All edges, corners and joints with the bathtub or floor are sealed with transparent or white sanitary silicone. This is what prevents water from entering from behind.
- Drying. 48-72 hours without water on the wall.
How long does shower wallpaper last?
Quality vinyl wallpaper applied to a properly prepared wall with sealed edges lasts 5-8 years with daily use. The early failures we see are almost always: edges that haven't been sealed (water gets in from behind and the adhesive weakens), a wall that hasn't been cleaned of soap residue, or cheap 0.1mm thick wallpaper that rips after a month.
Professional gluing or do it yourself?
You can stick it on yourself, and self-adhesive wallpaper is sold for exactly that. But a shower is the most challenging environment for wallpaper: uneven walls, lots of cuts, and above all, zero tolerance for mistakes, because every opening lets water in. Three things that most people who stick it on themselves don't do: caulk, primer, and silicone sealant at the edges. Without all three, the wallpaper will peel off within months. If you're going to stick it on yourself, at least buy thick vinyl and seal all the edges.
Wallpaper vs. shower renovation alternatives
Painting ceramics with epoxy. Cheap, but requires several coats, has a strong odor, takes 3-5 days to dry, and peels off in areas with hot water after a year or two. More suitable for the floor and walls outside the shower.
Panels (PVC/aluminum) on the ceramics. Very durable, modern looking, 2-3 times more expensive than wallpaper and require a carpenter or dedicated installer.
Ceramic replacement. The result is the most durable, but 2-3 weeks of work, waste removal and a cost of 10 times or more. More about Bonding ceramics to ceramics As an intermediate option.
Microtopping (smoothed concrete). Excellent appearance, expensive, and requires a skilled professional and perfect sealing.
Wallpaper is the fastest and cheapest solution, and is especially suitable for rented apartments, for renovation before sale, and for those who want results now without renovation.
Which pattern to choose for a shower
White marble with gray veins. The most popular choice: illuminates, optically enlarges a small shower, and hides limescale. Requires pattern matching between sheets.
Light gray concrete. Modern look, no repeating pattern, so easy to match and less wasteful. Especially suitable for showers with black faucets.
White metro tiles. Printing small tiles with a dark grout gives the appearance of new cladding without breaking it. Note that the pattern "competes" with the lines of the old ceramic, so filling the grout is a must.
tree. Warm and cozy, common in Scandinavian style, but sometimes looks unnatural inside a shower. Better on the wall facing the shower rather than inside it.
Uniform (white, cream, gray). The easiest to apply, best conveys the look of the wall underneath, and therefore requires perfect preparation.
Wallpaper for a shower in a rented apartment
This is one of the most common uses, and rightly so: the wallpaper is glued to the ceramic without damaging it, and can be removed at the end of the lease with heat and adhesive remover. Most landlords agree when you explain to them that there is no drilling, no paint, and no breakage. Our tip: Take a photo of the walls before, and keep the old silicone in place at the edges (we add a layer over it, not remove it).
What to do with the black rifle?
The shower head is getting dark from mold and limescale, and wallpapering it over it doesn't solve the problem, it just covers it up. Before gluing, we clean the head with an anti-mold agent, dry it, and only then fill and glue it. If the head is crumbling, it's a sign of water getting in behind the ceramic, and it's worth checking with Leak detection Before covering.
maintenance
Clean with water and mild soap or bathroom cleaner without abrasive powder. No hard brushes, no concentrated bleach. Once a year, check the silicone lines at the edges and renew if necessary. This way the wallpaper stays beautiful and sealed for years.
Examples from the field
A rented apartment in Tel Aviv, a shower with pink ceramics from the 1980s. White marble patterned vinyl wallpaper on three walls, 9 square meters, one working day. The apartment owner agreed that it could be removed.
Children's bath in Petah Tikva. Gun filler, primer, light gray concrete wallpaper inside the shower and moisture-resistant wallpaper in the rest of the bathroom. Two years later, no peeling.
A motel in Jerusalem, 6 showers. Premium scratch-resistant vinyl, changing a room in a day without closing the place.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does shower wallpaper really not get wet on the back? When it is glued to a prepared wall and sealed with silicone at all edges, no. The vinyl itself is completely waterproof; the only risk is at the edges, so the waterproofing is part of the job, not an add-on.
Can it be glued directly onto the ceramic? Yes, that's exactly what it's for. It's just important that the ceramic is clean, dry, and that the hole is filled if it's sunken.
Can you see the tile lines through the wallpaper? With thick vinyl and gunpowder filler, no. With thin wallpaper and no filler, yes, within a few weeks.
How long does the work take? Shower: 4-6 hours including preparation. Full bathroom: one day of work. Then 48-72 hours without water.
Can the wallpaper be removed in the future? Yes. With heat (face) and adhesive remover, without damaging the ceramic. Especially suitable for renters.
What examples are there? White/gray/black marble, concrete, wood, metro tiles, terrazzo, and uniforms. We bring a catalog and physical samples.
Is this also suitable for the kitchen? Yes, the same vinyl is used forPasting wallpaper on marble And the wall behind the stove.
What is the difference between shower wallpaper and shower stickers? ""Shower sticker" usually refers to the shower glass (Milky sticker (For privacy). "Shower wallpaper" refers to the walls. We do both, see Shower sticker.

How many rolls are needed – calculating the quantity for the shower and bathtub
A standard roll of self-adhesive vinyl is 60 cm wide and 5–10 meters long, meaning 3–6 square meters net. In practice, you need to add 15–25% depreciation for cuts, corners, and pattern adjustment. This is how the calculation looks for three common situations:
| What are you covering up? | Wall area | depreciation | Vinyl quantity | Labor cost (70–150 NIS per square meter) | Material cost (150–400 NIS per roll) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| One wall behind the sink | 2–3 square meters | 15% | One cylinder | 140–450 ₪ | 150–400 ₪ |
| 3-wall shower (80×80, height 2 m) | 5–6 square meters | 20% | 2 cylinders | 350–900 ₪ | 300–800 ₪ |
| Full bathroom (walls up to 2 m high) | 15–20 square meters | 20% | 4–6 rolls | 1,050–3,000 ₪ | 600–2,400 ₪ |
Tip: In marble samples with prominent veins, the depreciation is higher (up to 30%) due to the pattern matching between the sheets. In concrete or uniform samples, the depreciation is lowest.
Shower wallpaper by type of bathroom
Small bathroom (up to 4 square meters). Light shades and subtle patterns optically enlarge. White or light uniform marble. Since the area is small, it is worth investing in premium vinyl because the price difference is negligible.
Children's bathtub. Withstands frequent cleaning and a bit of paint. Thick vinyl in a colorful tile or light concrete pattern; double-sealed edges because kids splash in every direction.
Guest bath/guest toilet. Easy to use, so you can dare with dark patterns (black marble, terrazzo) that look luxurious.
Housing unit for rent. The most affordable solution for renting: Renovates an old shower in one day, is durable for tenants, and can be replaced between tenants for 20% flooring costs.
Master bath. Here, vinyl wallpaper is combined inside the shower, and moisture-resistant wallpaper in a complementary pattern on the rest of the walls, to achieve a designed and uniform look.
What is included in the price and what is not?
Our price for work per square meter includes:
- Cleaning the walls, removing grease and soap, treating mold.
- Filling a sunken rifle and smoothing it.
- Ceramic primer.
- Measuring, cutting and fitting a pattern.
- Gluing, smoothing and sealing with sanitary silicone on all edges.
- Responsibility for the infection.
Not included, and priced separately:
- The material itself (vinyl rolls), unless otherwise agreed. We can supply or you can install it yourself according to the specifications given.
- Dismantling and reassembling a glass shower, faucets or shelves that block access.
- Replacing old, crumbling silicone around the bathtub (separate job).
- Treating loose tiles or a wet wall (see below).
What to do if there is moisture behind the wall
Wallpaper does not solve a moisture problem, it hides it, and this is an expensive mistake. Signs of moisture behind the ceramic: a gun that is crumbling, tiles that sound hollow when they click, stains on the wall of the next room, or a constant musty smell. In such cases, we stop and refer toLeak detection Before gluing. If you glue on a wet wall, the glue will fail within weeks and the mold will continue to grow under the vinyl.
Shower wallpaper by area
We wallpaper bathrooms in Tel Aviv, Ramat Gan, Givatayim, Holon, Bat Yam, Rishon Lezion, Petah Tikva, Herzliya, Raanana, Kfar Saba, Hod Hasharon, Netanya, Modi'in, Jerusalem, Haifa, Beer Sheva and Ashdod. In old apartments in the Dan area (buildings from the 1960s–1980s), the ceramic is usually small and has a deep groove, so filling the groove is a central part of the work. In new construction (Modi'in, new neighborhoods in Rishon and Netanya), the tiles are large and the groove is thin, and the preparation is shorter.
Glossary
Self-adhesive vinyl (Self-adhesive PVC). A plastic sheet with a layer of adhesive is ready. The kind that fits in the shower.
Non-woven. Synthetic fiber base for wallpaper; resistant to moisture but not to running water. For bathroom walls outside the shower.
Primer. A primer layer that improves the adhesion of the adhesive to the ceramic.
Filling a rifle. Filling the recessed gun lines so that the wallpaper will lay on a flat surface.
Sanitary silicone. Silicone with anti-mold additive, for sealing edges in wet areas.
Example matching. Attaching sheets so that the pattern continues. Adds waste but is necessary in marble and tile patterns.
Checklist before booking
- Take a picture of the shower and measure each wall (width × height up to the height you want to cover).
- Check your rifle: sunken or flat? crumbling or intact?
- Check for signs of dampness (hollow tiles, stains, odor).
- Choose a model based on the size of the bathroom and the nature of use.
- Wait 48–72 hours without showering after infection.
- Ask in the proposal: separate details of labor and material, the type and thickness of vinyl, and warranty.
More questions about shower wallpaper
Is it possible to wallpaper a painted wall in a bathroom? Yes, if the paint is stable and not peeling. Clean, smooth out loose spots and apply primer. Peeling paint must be scraped and repaired first.
Is the wallpaper resistant to heat from hot water? Thick vinyl can withstand the temperatures of a home shower without a problem. What is dangerous is a direct heat source (a heater attached to the wall), and there leave a gap.
What happens in inner corners? At the corners, we fold one sheet into the corner and glue the other on top with an overlap of 1–2 cm, then seal. An outer corner (pillar) receives a continuous sheet without a joint.
Can it be glued to the shower ceiling? It is possible, but not recommended: vapors condense on the ceiling and weaken the adhesive at the edges. Anti-mold paint is better for the ceiling.
Is the wallpaper suitable for a bathroom without a window and weak ventilation? Yes, provided there is a fan. Vinyl does not absorb moisture, but without ventilation mold will develop on the silicone and in the corners anyway.
What is the difference between shower wallpaper and a square "ceramic sticker"? Individual tile stickers are designed for tile-on-tile outside the shower, with many joints, each of which is a point of water ingress. A continuous sheet is much better inside the shower.
Is it possible to wallpaper over a bathtub (and not in a shower)? Yes, it's even easier: less direct water, and only the line above the bathtub requires careful sealing.
How long is the offer valid? 30 days. Vinyl prices vary, so a date is specified in the offer.
What to ask before closing with a wallpaper paster
- What is the thickness of the vinyl? At least 0.3 mm for a shower. A 0.1 mm thin "bathroom wallpaper" will not survive.
- Do you fill the gun beforehand? If the answer is "no need", within a month you will see the squares.
- Are sanitary silicone sealants used? Without sealing the edges, water enters from the back.
- What does the warranty include? Peeling and split ends, for a period of years rather than weeks.
- Do you see physical examples? A marble pattern looks different on your screen and in your bathroom.
Why choose retaining stones for shower wallpaper?
We come with samples, check the wall before committing (including moisture and gunk), prepare the wall properly, and seal every edge. The quote lists labor and material separately, so you can compare. If it seems like your shower is not suitable for wallpaper (moisture, loose tiles), we will say so up front and offer an alternative, such as Bonding ceramics to ceramics Or coloring.
What the day of infection looks like, hour by hour
So you know what to expect, this is what a typical job in a 3-wall shower looks like:
08:00 – Arrival and check-in. Re-inspection of the walls: tapping on the tiles, looking at the gun, checking for moisture. Final confirmation of the sample against the physical samples.
08:30 – Cleaning. Removes scale and degreases all walls, rinses, dries with a mop and cloth. If there is mold in the area, treats with a special agent and waits to dry.
09:30 – Filling the rifle and primer. Filling all recessed rifle lines, smoothing, briefly drying, then applying a coat of primer over the entire surface.
10:30 – Measuring and cutting. Each wall is measured separately, the sheets are cut to size with a pattern matching.
11:00 – Infection. Wall after wall, from the most prominent corner outward. Smoothing with a plastic squeegee, cutting around faucets and niches, pressing at the edges.
1:00 PM – Sealing and finishing. Sanitary silicone on all edges, corners and where it meets the bathtub or floor. Final cleaning.
1:30 PM – End. Explanation of maintenance and the 48–72 hours without water. Before and after photos.
Average shower: 5–6 hours. Complete bath: a full day of work, and sometimes an extra morning to finish.
Wallpaper vs. Re-tiling – Comparing Cost and Time for an Average Shower
| solution | Working time | Days without a shower | Dirt and dust | Estimated cost for a 3-wall shower enclosure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Waterproof vinyl wallpaper | 5–6 hours | 2–3 | nothing | Labor 350–900 ₪ + 2 rolls 300–800 ₪ |
| Painting ceramics with epoxy | 2 days | 4–5 | Strong smell | According to the quote |
| Ceramic bonding About ceramics | 2–3 days | 5–7 | few | According to the quote |
| Breaking and resurfacing | 5–10 days | 10–14 | many | The highest, 5–10 times higher than wallpaper |
The conclusion is simple: when the wall is in good condition and only the appearance is outdated, wallpaper gives the fastest and cheapest result. When there is moisture or loose tiles, wallpaper is not suitable and the problem needs to be addressed first.
In conclusion
Waterproof shower wallpaper is the fastest and cheapest way to renovate a shower without renovation: a day's work, no dust, and a result that lasts for years if the preparation and sealing are done correctly. The cost of the work ranges from 70 to 150 NIS per square meter, and another 150–400 NIS for a roll of vinyl. Send a picture of the shower and dimensions to 052-444-0565 and you will receive a quote the same day.
