Did you buy a plug-in car? You have the best of both worlds. But how do you charge it?
Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV) are the perfect solution for many: short trips within the city on electricity alone (huge savings), and long trips on gasoline without "range anxiety". But because their battery is significantly smaller than that of Electric vehicle Full (usually enough for 40-60 km), the question arises:
Do I have to install an expensive charging station, or can I simply plug the vehicle into a regular outlet at home?
The short answer is: Yes, it is possible – but there are safety rules that must be known.
בStones Holdings We are here to make things right and offer you the most affordable and safest solution.
Is it allowed to charge from a regular household outlet?
Most plug-in vehicles come from the manufacturer with a portable charging cable that is compatible with a household outlet (sometimes called a "granny cable" or Mode 2). Technically, you can plug it into a wall outlet and the vehicle will charge.
Because the battery is small, a full charge from a regular outlet will take about 3 to 5 hours (as opposed to 20 hours in a fully electric vehicle). That sounds reasonable, But this is where the safety problem begins.
The dangers of using a regular outlet over time
A standard household outlet in Israel was not designed to operate at a high load (about 10 amps) continuously for hours, day after day. Regular use of a standard outlet may cause:
- Socket heating: The plastic may melt.
- Burning contacts: Risk of ignition inside the wall.
- Accelerated wear: The socket will be destroyed very quickly from daily plugging and unplugging.
Iron rule: Never use a household extension cord! Connecting an electric vehicle to an extension cord ("roller" or white cord) is a surefire recipe for fire. These cables cannot handle the load.
Recommended Plug-in Solution: "Power Outlet" (Sycon Outlet)
If you don't want to invest thousands of shekels in a smart charging station (Wallbox) that is unnecessary for your needs, but want to sleep peacefully without fear of a fire – Installing a dedicated power outlet is the solution.
At "Avni Ahikut" we recommend and perform installation of Industrial socket (CEE) Or a reinforced household outlet (a quality "Gavis" outlet) on a separate line.
What does such an installation involve?
Instead of simply plugging into an existing outlet in the living room and running a cable through the window, our certified electrician will:
- Direct line from the board: Laying a separate, direct electrical line from the electrical panel to the parking lot (at least 2.5 mm cable).
- Protections on the board: Installing a dedicated circuit breaker and time switch in the electrical panel to protect against short circuits and electric shock.
- Quality socket: Installing a durable power outlet (usually blue) designed for high loads and outdoor conditions (waterproof), or installing a high-quality "modular" outlet inside a protected box.
The benefits of a dedicated power outlet:
- Maximum safety: Zero risk of overheating and fire.
- Low cost: Significantly cheaper than purchasing and installing a full charging station.
- Maintaining the vehicle: Stable and clean current.
When is it still worth installing a charging station (Wallbox) for a plug-in vehicle?
Although a power outlet is an excellent solution, there are cases in which we would still prefer to install a permanent stand:
- comfort: Tired of taking the cable out of the trunk every day? A fixed stand with a built-in cable is much more convenient.
- Thinking for the future: If you plan to switch to a fully electric vehicle in the future, the charging station will already be ready and will serve you for your next vehicle as well.
- speed: Some new plug-in vehicles support faster charging than a regular outlet can provide.
In conclusion
Charging a plug-in vehicle from a regular outlet is technically possible, but requires great caution and is not recommended as a permanent solution.
The smartest and most cost-effective solution is to hire an electrician to install it. Dedicated power line. This way you can enjoy safe charging with peace of mind, without spending a fortune on a sophisticated stand you don't need.
